Voice FAQ

What should I bring to my first lesson?

Please find a bag that you can use as your voice bag. There’s no need to buy a new bag, an old backpack or tote will be great. This is what you will store your music notebook, practice sheets, music books and flashcards at home. You will bring this bag to every class.

What will I need for home practicing?

You will need a CD player. We find that students that can play their CD in their own room with no parental involvement seem to do best. You can buy one at WalMart or online at Amazon.

Guitar FAQ

What are the things I need for my first lesson?

A guitar, the music book, a pick, a strap, and a tuner. It would also be good to have a soft or hard bag to protect your guitar. If you want to visit a store, they will talk to you and answer your questions for a long time. I really enjoying buying things at Guitar Center because they are happy to help and answer all my questions. 23811 El Toro Road, Lake Forest, CA 92630 949-609-0055

See questions below for advice on buying each item.

What if I need to buy a guitar?

Guitar Center is on the corner of Rockfield and El Toro in Lake Forest near the Costume Castle.

If you need a guitar, but are worried about the price, here’s a great beginner guitar that's $49 -$69 depending on the specials. It takes about a week to arrive from Guitar Center. If the link isn’t working, you can search under Rogue RA-090 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar.

What if my guitar is broken?

Guitar Center has a fix it place but it takes a few days. If you need new strings they can do it there, but you need to get it in soon so it is ready in time... Fixing a guitar is sometimes expensive. We had an old guitar for Penelope but it was cheaper to buy a new beginner guitar than put together the old one. Just stop by and they can give you a quote to help you decide. Guitar Center is on the corner of Rockfield and El Toro in Lake Forest near the Costume Castle. https://www.guitarcenter.com

If you didn’t get the case with the picks and the strap, you can buy a standard strap on Amazon.

Here is a tuner that is digital. It is $10 on Amazon. This looks just like the one I bought at Guitar Center for double the price. https://tinyurl.com/nornkyb

Piano FAQ

What should I know about my first lesson at the Glee Studio?

Please walk in the front door and peek your head and wait on the couch in the lobby. The teacher will come to get you when it is your music lesson time.

What should I bring for my first lesson?

Please bring a 3-ring notebook to keep your practice sheets in. A view binder is nice but not required. It makes it so you can easily identify it as your piano notebook. We will sell you a notebook for $5.75 if you don't remember to bring one to your lesson.

Do I need a piano to start lessons?

Yes. It is really important to have a piano so that students can develop proper technique, be able to develop a wide dynamic range (volume), and learn how to work with the piano to create beautiful music. While it certainly is wonderful to be able to practice on a grand piano, a baby grand or upright pianos work as well. If you are worried about cost, there are companies in Orange County that rent pianos at a reasonable price. If you have a keyboard, it is acceptable for the first 2-3 months. After that, please be prepared to make the investment of buying/renting a piano.

Here are a few keyboards on Amazon:

How do I encourage my student to practice?

The best thing you can do for your student is to include a regular practice time in their daily routine. Our Commitment To Excellence program encourages students to practice. At the end of each lesson, the student and the teacher make a practice goal to work towards for the week.

How much should my student practice?

Students should practice 4-7 days a week. Length of practice is dependent on age and dedication, and will be decided in the lessons with the teacher. Our Commitment to Excellence program rewards students based on their practicing habits.

What piano books will I use?

At Glee, we create a customized learning plan for each piano student. Books will be chosen based on the student’s age and goals regarding their piano journey.

What if I want to do Certificate of Merit?

Talk with the teacher to see if your student would benefit from the program. Sign-ups are in the Fall, and testing is done usually near the end of February and beginning of March. If you are interested in Certificate of Merit, the best time to let the teacher know is in September. Your teacher must be an active member of Music Teacher's Association to be involved. Ask Karstin Lake for more details.

What is the parent’s role for piano lessons?

The very best students have parents who are actively involved in their children’s music education. For the younger students between ages 4 –6 years old, it is really important to have an adult that is willing to stay during lessons to understand what is being assigned so practice at home can be the most effective. For kids ages 7-10, it is important to have a parent at home that helps the student establish a habit of practicing. Depending on the student, parent involvement in the lesson and at home practice can be very beneficial. For ages 11+ years old, parent involvement is dependent on the student. For all ages, it is very beneficial to have a person or parent that is helping the student keep a consistent habit of practicing.

Where is my lesson?

The majority of the students take piano lessons at the Glee Studio at 25 Spectrum Pointe Drive, Suite 406, Lake Forest, CA 92630.
